瓦（かわら）とは、おもに屋根葺き用に使われる、本来は粘土瓦のことを言い、たとえば、ドイツでは粘土製のものをほかのものと区別してZiegel（ツィーゲル＝瓦、煉瓦）と呼んでいる。日本でも、単に瓦という場合には本瓦のものや桟瓦のもの等の一定の形をした粘土瓦のことであるという認識が多い。現在でも、セメントや金属などの材料も使われ、通常の粘土瓦が使用できない寒さの厳しい地域や個人の好み等によって粘土瓦の代わりに葺かれることがある。ここでは主に粘土瓦のことに関して記している。
